Definitions

  • "You" / "the client" / "the student" refers to the student receiving lessons, a parent/guardian booking on their behalf, or a writing/editing services client.

  • "I" / "me" / “Lisa Newill-Smith" refers to Lisa Newill-Smith, who provides services including but not limited to voice lessons, piano lessons, English tutoring, writing services, editing services, transcription services, and reading services.

Booking & Payment

  • All lessons, consultations, and meetings must be requested at least 24 hours before the appointment. Lessons and meetings can be arranged by email or WhatsApp. Free consultations must be booked through the appointments section of this website.

  • Lessons and tutoring sessions must either be paid for before the lesson via bank transfer or upon arrival with cash.

  • Lessons can be purchased as single sessions or in a block. Lessons booked in a block receive a discount.

  • All purchased lessons (individual or block bookings) must be used within 4 months of purchase. No extensions unless agreed in exceptional circumstances.

  • Prices are subject to annual review.

  • Writing and editing services require a free consultation before confirmation.

  • Writing and editing services are payable by bank transfer according to the project agreement (see Writing and Editing Services section).

Writing and Editing Services

  • First, Lisa Newill-Smith and the client will have a 30-minute free consultation to discuss the project, including a timeline, price estimate, and general requirements.

  • Within a week of the consultation, I will provide a clear project proposal, including an estimated cost, timeline, payment schedule, and rewrite allowances.

  • Within 1 week of receiving the proposal, the client must email Lisa Newill-Smith with any questions or concerns they may have. We will either make changes by email or in a second free consultation. If more consultations are required, the client will be charged an agreed-upon hourly rate.

  • Within 2 weeks of receiving the proposal, the client must return a signed version of the proposal, the "project agreement" (unless otherwise stated), and pay the deposit or full price, depending on the terms of the project agreement.

  • As per the project agreement, I will send any updates and schedule any required meetings.

  • The project will be delivered according to the deadline in the project agreement. If there are delays, I will promptly let the client know, and an addendum to the project agreement will be arranged if necessary.

  • Once the project is delivered, any rewrite requests must be communicated promptly. Rewrites will be provided as per the project agreement. Any further rewrites will require a new project agreement.

  • Any outstanding payments must be fulfilled within 2 weeks of receiving the final product.

Lessons and Tutoring Sessions

Cancellations & Rescheduling
  • Once booked, lessons can be canceled or rescheduled up to 24 hours before the scheduled time at no charge.

  • Reschedules with less than 24 hours' notice will be charged in full. Depending on my schedule availability and specific circumstances, you may be able to reschedule your lesson for a small fee.

  • No refunds are given for missed sessions.

  • If you are traveling by public transport, please be aware of any works on the line or possible delays.

  • If I need to cancel a lesson, I will offer to reschedule at a mutually convenient time. If rescheduling isn’t possible, I will offer a full refund.

Emergencies/Exceptional Circumstances
  • Please reschedule or ask to switch to an online lesson if you are sick. Keep in mind that I am a working singer! If you’re able to sing and speak, we can change your in-person lesson to an online one.

  • If you aren't sure whether you're healthy, reschedule or ask to move online at least 24 hours before your lesson.

  • I understand that sometimes there are unavoidable emergencies. Please reach out if this happens and you need to cancel/reschedule within the 24-hour window.

  • For voice lessons, please still come to your lesson if your voice is tired from overuse or allergies. I have many exercises to help the voice recover.

  • I reserve the right to refuse or stop a lesson if a client is ill or under the influence, or exhibiting inappropriate, violent, or abusive behaviour. In such cases, lessons may be rescheduled at my discretion or terminated without refund.

Lesson/Tutoring Session schedules
  • Lessons last 30 minutes or 60 minutes, depending on the option booked.

  • For voice lessons, we can either begin with a warmup or, if you come warmed up, we can jump into repertoire or technique.

  • I'll spend the last 5 minutes giving you a practice plan or homework for the week.

  • The lesson will end on time, regardless of the starting time.

  • Please arrive at least 5 minutes early. For in-person lessons, I will let you know about a waiting room area/arrival time before your lesson, since it will depend on the venue. For online sessions, log in to your Zoom account 5 minutes early to check that it's all working ok and to set up the sound settings.

  • If you are traveling by public transport, please be aware of any works on the line or possible delays. Berlin regularly has construction, which causes significant delays.

  • If you plan to pay in cash, please bring exact change. If you plan to pay by bank transfer, please pay before the lesson begins.

  • Online lessons take place on Zoom. Please check my teaching section to see how to set up your Zoom video optimally. External microphones are not necessary, but are always nice.

  • If you are having internet problems, please send me a message on WhatsApp or by email ASAP.

Health Disclaimer
  • By booking a voice or piano lesson, you accept responsibility for your vocal and physical health. You perform all exercises and tasks at your own risk.

  • Before your first lesson or at the beginning of your first voice lesson, please inform me of any previous or current health issues or vocal problems, including breathing problems, neck, back, or posture issues, strong allergies, or previous vocal surgeries. For piano lessons, please inform me of any previous or current health issues or muscular issues, including tendonitis, back or posture issues, or ankle pain.

  • I am not a medical expert. If I believe that there are deeper issues, I will recommend that you consult an ENT or other medical practitioner.

  • If you feel any discomfort (physical or emotional) or pain during a lesson, let me know immediately. We will take a break and find a different approach.

  • If you are returning to voice lessons or piano lessons after an injury or illness, there is an increased risk of hurting yourself. It's essential to let me know if you have had a recent injury or illness so I can structure the lesson accordingly.

  • Some songs and arias may reference certain themes that could be disturbing. Please let me know if you do not want to sing a certain song or aria, and we will choose another one.
